Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Newly merged trust, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (Somerset FT) is shifting its culture to more modern thinking with the help of Radar’s state of the art technology. We spoke to Stephen Thompson, associate director of integrated governance, and Paula Wiggins, governance systems manager, from the Trust.

We’re actually ahead of the game with Radar

Paula Wiggins - Governance Systems Manager at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

At the forefront of change

Excited that Radar’s software provides a new way of thinking and is fresh and modern, Somerset FT explains how it was previously using two systems, and needed to move towards a more integrated way of working.

Shared learnings across the trust

The part of Radar which really gets Somerset FT excited is the analytics. They love that there is very real data that makes a huge difference when it comes to sharing it. This is because it shows trends so it’s easy for them to spot things quickly, whether they’re good or bad. They can then take action from these findings and share their learnings across the trust.

It’s so flexible it enables us to think outside our little box that we used to think in before

Linking together

Somerset FT is deploying Radar across the whole organisation. They’ve started using it for incident reporting, and have various teams involved. Radar’s software covers just about everything related to their patient safety and risk management processes, enabling it to be used across the board whilst also linking all elements together in one centralised place.

Culture change

When discussing a few highlights that were positive for where Somerset FT was going, the chief medical officer specifically mentioned Radar as a real opportunity for culture change. They’re excited for getting the frontline commissioners interested and using the system, along with other aspects Radar can enable them to improve on in the future.

The way Radar links across all streams of work and pulls them together is like a big jigsaw built around the patient

Paula Wiggins - Governance Systems Manager at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

They explain that the whole reason for having a strong culture of openness and safety first is to improve patient care. Their culture has always been patient focused; Radar provides them with visibility of the organisation as a whole, including their patients, which further strengthens this.

Recommending to other trusts

I don’t know anyone else who’s as excited about their reporting system as we are

Paula Wiggins - Governance Systems Manager at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

They encourage others to have a look at the software and think about a different way of managing patient safety, risk and governance. But it has to be right for them – it’s an important journey, but an organisation needs to be ready to take this on.

It’s easy to remain with your current systems, adapting your processes to fit your software; we’ve not had to do this thanks to Radar’s flexibility
